Coopers operates independently of SA Water by sourcing saline groundwater from 200m underground, and treating the water through a highly efficient on-site reverse osmosis (RO) plant. Coopers currently uses about 450 million litres of water a year, and costs are less than 50% of equivalent mains water. Working with the EPA, Tom Bullock (now Coopers’ Supply Chain Manager) supervised the construction of a 7 km underground pipeline in 2002 to pump saline retentate from the RO plant to the wetlands to the north of the brewery.

In addition, Coopers recycles up to 35 million litres of water from its operations per year.
