Fulfilling the commitment secured by Tim Cooper from AGL in 2000 when negotiating a comprehensive site energy agreement, a 4.4 Megawatt cogeneration plant was commissioned in 2003. This natural gas powered plant now provides most of Coopers’ electricity and steam requirements, and feeds excess power into South Australia’s grid.

The plant has an overall thermal efficiency of 80%, about 2.5 times greater than conventional power stations. Not only does Coopers enjoy full backup in both steam and power supply, allowing work to continue despite disruptions to power or gas, but the plant also saves an estimated 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
